Deus Ex Fans Face Disappointment: No New Game Expected in 2026
Elias Toufexis, renowned for voicing Adam Jensen-the iconic protagonist of the Deus Ex series and the celebrated robotic employee of the year-has recently dashed hopes for a new installment arriving in 2026. In a candid and humorous tweet, Toufexis attributed the delay to the “psychopaths” currently steering the franchise.
Hints and Mysteries: Toufexis’s 2026 Projects
Marking the start of the new year, Toufexis shared a playful image teasing his upcoming voice work slated for 2026. Among the four projects displayed, one was unmistakably Bungie’s anticipated extraction shooter, Marathon. The other three, however, were obscured by non-disclosure agreements, leaving fans to speculate about their nature.
This glimpse of secretive projects sparked renewed optimism among Deus Ex enthusiasts, who have been eagerly awaiting news of a fresh chapter. The franchise’s last major releases include the original Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War in the early 2000s, followed by Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 2016. Since then, the series has remained silent, despite its enduring popularity.
Behind the Scenes: The Fate of Deus Ex
Despite the excitement, Toufexis’s blunt message-“no Deus Ex because the people in charge are psychopaths”-reflects the frustration felt by many fans. The cliffhanger ending of Mankind Divided left numerous story threads unresolved, heightening the desire for continuation.
To understand the current situation, it’s important to note that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix in 2016. In 2022, Square Enix sold the intellectual property, along with other major franchises like Tomb Raider and Thief, and the entire Eidos Montreal studio to Embracer Group. Unfortunately, in 2024, Embracer canceled a planned Deus Ex title and downsized a significant portion of the development team. As of now, Embracer Group still holds ownership of the franchise and the studio.
Is There Hope for Adam Jensen’s Return?
While the future of Deus Ex remains uncertain, there are glimmers of optimism. Crystal Dynamics, another studio acquired by Embracer from Square Enix, recently announced a new Tomb Raider installment, signaling that beloved franchises can be revived under the new management. If Lara Croft can make a comeback, perhaps Adam Jensen’s story isn’t over yet. Fans continue to hold out hope for a resurgence of this iconic sci-fi saga.
