Situated in Haman County within South Gyeongsang Province, the PIPE ROBOFAB facility spans 6,500 square meters and boasts an annual production capacity of around 100,000 pipe spools.

Revolutionizing Production with Robotics and AI

SHI highlights that the integration of cutting-edge robotic systems in spool fabrication significantly reduces manufacturing lead times while simultaneously improving workplace safety standards.

“Artificial intelligence and automation are transforming industries worldwide,” stated Won-young Choi, Head of SHI’s labor association. “As shipbuilding demand grows, ongoing collaboration between labor and management is essential to expand employment opportunities, maintain job security for frontline workers, and foster a safe working environment.”

Smart Factory Integration and Advanced Technologies

The company has implemented a comprehensive smart management platform that seamlessly connects all stages-from piping design and automated logistics to precision machining, alignment, and welding. This system is enhanced by Vision AI technology, enabling a fully automated production workflow.

“The PIPE ROBOFAB facility exemplifies a breakthrough in pipe spool manufacturing by merging our expert welding craftsmanship with triple-excellence (3X) technologies,” explained Sung-an Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of SHI. “This innovation is set to elevate the shipbuilding industry’s manufacturing efficiency and global competitiveness.”

Implications for the Future of Shipbuilding

With global shipbuilding orders projected to increase by 5% annually through 2030, facilities like PIPE ROBOFAB position South Korea at the forefront of industrial automation in maritime manufacturing. This advancement not only streamlines production but also aligns with the industry’s shift toward greener, safer, and more sustainable operations.

By embracing robotic fabrication, SHI is setting a new benchmark for quality and productivity, potentially inspiring similar technological adoptions across shipyards worldwide.
