Patel emphasizes, “Unless explicitly stated by the researchers or companies that the robot functions entirely autonomously, viewers should remain skeptical about the robot’s independence.” This caution is crucial to avoid overestimating current robotic capabilities.
Assessing the Novelty of the Robot’s Environment
Another critical factor is whether the robot is performing in an entirely new setting or simply repeating tasks it has been trained on in a controlled environment. Demonstrations where robots adapt to unfamiliar scenarios provide stronger evidence of genuine autonomous functionality.
