CUHK Launches Advanced AI Robotics Laboratory at Science Park

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has inaugurated a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence laboratory at Science Park, dedicated to advancing the cognitive capabilities of robots.

Hong Kong Embodied AI Lab: A Hub for Robotics Innovation

Operated by CUHK’s Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics, the newly established Hong Kong Embodied AI Lab represents the city’s first comprehensive facility focused on the full spectrum of AI robotics development. Partnering with 24 leading industry players, the lab aims to address some of the most complex challenges in the realm of embodied artificial intelligence.

Bridging Academia and Industry for Breakthroughs

Professor Li Zhongyu, co-director of the lab, emphasized the unique collaborative approach that distinguishes this initiative. “Our goal is to achieve human-like intelligence in robots within the next decade,” Li explained. “What sets us apart is the close partnership with industry stakeholders, which is crucial because embodied AI is an emerging field where both academia and industry are still exploring solutions.”

Impact Beyond CUHK: Regional and Global Significance

Irwin King, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, highlighted the broader educational and technological benefits stemming from the lab’s work. “The knowledge and skills developed here will extend beyond CUHK, benefiting universities across Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and internationally,” King noted. He also pointed out the lab’s emphasis on hands-on learning, stating, “Students engage in active experimentation with physical robots rather than relying solely on simulations, fostering deeper understanding and innovation.”

Advancing Robotics Through Real-World Applications

By focusing on embodied AI-where robots perceive, learn, and interact with their environment-the lab is positioned to contribute significantly to sectors such as logistics, manufacturing, and service industries. Recent studies indicate that the global AI robotics market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 25% through 2028, underscoring the importance of such research hubs.

With this initiative, CUHK is not only pushing the boundaries of robotic intelligence but also nurturing a new generation of experts equipped to drive innovation in AI-driven automation worldwide.
