Ant Group Ventures into Humanoid Robotics with Innovative R1 Model
Ant Group has officially stepped into the humanoid robotics arena, unveiling its first product, the R1 robot, at a prominent technology exhibition held in Shanghai. This move positions the fintech giant to challenge established players like Unitree Robotics in the rapidly evolving field of embodied artificial intelligence.
Introducing R1: A Versatile Humanoid Robot
The R1, engineered by Ant Lingbo Technology-Ant Group’s dedicated robotics division also known as Robbyant-is a two-armed, wheeled humanoid robot designed for multifunctional applications. At the four-day Inclusion Conference on the Bund, attendees witnessed two R1 units on display, with one demonstrating culinary skills by preparing ingredients in a simulated kitchen environment.
Technical Specifications and Functional Capabilities
The initial version of the R1 weighs approximately 110 kilograms and stands between 1.6 to 1.75 meters tall. It can navigate at speeds up to 1.5 meters per second and boasts 34 degrees of freedom, enabling fluid and precise movements. Its adaptability allows it to serve as a tour guide, a chef, or to execute tasks remotely controlled by operators.
Commercial Deployment and Market Strategy
According to representatives at the event, the R1 has already entered mass production and has been delivered to clients including the Shanghai History Museum. Rather than marketing the R1 as an individual product, Ant Lingbo Technology offers it as part of comprehensive, scenario-specific solutions tailored to client needs. Development of a second-generation R1 model is currently underway, promising enhanced features and capabilities.
Company Background and Strategic Vision
Founded in late 2024 and headquartered in Shanghai’s Pudong district, Ant Lingbo Technology was officially launched in March with the presence of key figures such as Ant Group chairman Eric Jing Xiandong and CEO Cyril Han Xinyi. In August, the company expanded by establishing a subsidiary in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. As a subsidiary of Alibaba, Ant Group aims to leverage robotics to broaden its service offerings beyond digital platforms.
Future Outlook: Bridging Digital and Physical Realms
Zhu Xing, CEO of Robbyant, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing intelligent robotics despite being new entrants in the sector. “Our focus is on developing embodied intelligence to extend Ant Group’s services-ranging from public welfare and healthcare to finance-into the physical world,” Zhu stated. This strategic direction highlights the growing trend of integrating AI-driven robots into everyday environments to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency.
