Apple Poised to Acquire Key Talent and Technology from AI Startup Prompt AI
Recent reports reveal that Apple is on the verge of finalizing an acquisition deal involving the expertise and technological assets of Prompt AI, a computer vision startup. This move highlights Apple’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its artificial intelligence capabilities.
Details of the Pending Acquisition
According to insider information, the leadership team at Prompt AI convened an all-hands meeting with employees to discuss the imminent acquisition by Apple. Staff members were informed that those opting not to transition to Apple would face reduced compensation and were encouraged to explore other job opportunities within the company.
“Prompt’s management disclosed the upcoming deal during a company-wide meeting, emphasizing that employees not joining Apple would receive lower salaries and were advised to apply for open positions elsewhere,” the sources stated.
Additionally, Prompt employees have been instructed to maintain confidentiality regarding the acquisition when engaging in job searches or communicating with acquaintances.
Acquihiring: A Strategic Trend in the AI Sector
The practice of acquiring startups primarily for their talent and intellectual property-known as acquihiring-has become increasingly prevalent among leading technology firms. This approach allows companies to integrate specialized teams and innovations without the complexities of full company mergers, often circumventing regulatory hurdles.
For instance, Microsoft invested $650 million last year to license technology from Inflection AI, simultaneously onboarding most of its personnel, including co-founder Mustafa Suleyman. Similarly, Google executed acquihire-style agreements with Character.AI in 2024 and Windsurf earlier this year.
Meta has also embraced this strategy by investing in Scale AI and recruiting its CEO, Alexandr Wang, along with key team members. Amazon followed suit with its acquisition of Adept’s talent pool.
Implications for Prompt AI and Its Users
As part of the acquisition, Apple plans to discontinue Prompt AI’s Seemour application. Users will be notified that their data will be securely deleted, ensuring privacy protection in line with Apple’s stringent standards.
Prompt AI had reportedly been facing challenges in establishing a viable business model, which may have precipitated the acquisition interest. Notably, Elon Musk’s ventures, xAI and Neuralink, have also been active players in the AI landscape, underscoring the competitive environment.
While the financial terms of Apple’s deal with Prompt AI remain undisclosed, further details are expected to emerge upon completion of the transaction.
