Google.org Commits $2 Million to Advance AI Research at Wits University’s MIND Institute

In a significant boost to artificial intelligence research in Africa, Google.org has granted $2 million to the Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery Institute (MIND) at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg. This investment aims to fast-track scientific innovation by fostering collaborative efforts that bridge academia, industry, and policy sectors.

Empowering African AI Research Through Strategic Funding

The generous funding will enhance MIND’s specialized initiatives focused on expanding research capacity, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and facilitating meaningful dialogue among scholars, business leaders, and government officials. These efforts are designed to cultivate a vibrant ecosystem where AI breakthroughs can translate into tangible societal benefits.

Positioning Africa at the Forefront of Intelligence Research

Professor Benjamin Rosman, a leading figure at the Wits MIND Institute, emphasizes the institute’s mission: “Our goal is to place African researchers at the vanguard of both natural and artificial intelligence studies.” The support from Google.org enables the institute to nurture emerging talent, incubate innovative ideas, and ensure that research outcomes positively impact communities across the continent.

Rapid Growth and Diverse Research Endeavors

Since its inception in November 2024, following over a decade of Wits University’s commitment to postgraduate education and pan-African AI capacity building, the MIND Institute has swiftly evolved into a premier research hub. Currently, MIND researchers are engaged in 25 diverse projects, spanning areas such as reinforcement learning, computational neuroscience, and digital humanities. The MINDFund initiative provides both targeted capacity-building support and seed funding for pioneering research, currently backing five innovative projects.

Fostering a Collaborative and Multidisciplinary Research Community

The institute recently welcomed its inaugural cohort of 34 MIND Fellows, including distinguished research chairs and National Research Foundation-rated scholars from multiple faculties across Wits University. This diverse group exemplifies the institute’s commitment to cross-disciplinary collaboration, sparking new ideas and research synergies.

Championing African Perspectives in Global AI Development

MIND is dedicated to ensuring that Africa’s unique cultural and demographic diversity-representing over one billion people-is reflected in the development and governance of AI technologies. By shaping AI models and policies that resonate with African contexts, the institute secures the continent’s voice in the global AI landscape.

Wits University’s Legacy and Vision for Technological Leadership

Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice Chancellor of Wits University, highlights the institute’s pioneering role: “Hosting the Wits MIND Institute aligns with our historic contributions to technology, from early radar innovations to South Africa’s first computer. Google.org’s support strengthens our shared vision to position Africa at the cutting edge of AI research and development.”

Engage with the Wits MIND Institute

Researchers, industry partners, and policymakers are encouraged to join the expanding MIND community. Stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities by subscribing to the institute’s updates. Prospective applicants should note that the next call for MIND Fellows will open in September 2025.
