KFSHRC Performs World’s First Robotic Intracranial Tumor Resection (19459000)

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has performed the first robotic intracranial tumour resection in the world. This landmark marks a major advance in neurosurgical precision, and the postoperative recovery.

This surgery was performed on a patient aged 68 who suffered from severe headaches. The robotic arms were used by surgeons to remove a 4.5 centimeter brain tumour in one hour. The patient was fully conscious and discharged within 24 hours, which is nearly four times faster than the recovery time of traditional brain surgery.

Precision, safety through robotic innovation

Dr. Homoud aldahash, consultant of skull base tumors at KFSHRC, and lead surgeon in the procedure, highlighted that the robotic system was able to deliver unprecedented precision. He explained that the robotic arms enabled him to navigate delicate neurovascular tissues safely. “The patient was discharged the same day without complications, setting a new standard for neurosurgical innovation.” Advanced image-guided technology allowed for the precise removal of the tumor while protecting vital brain areas, enhancing accuracy and patient safety.

KFSHRC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Majid Al-Ayyadh, credited the achievement with the hospital’s ongoing efforts to transform. “This achievement reflects KFSHRC’s growing influence on shaping the future global medicine,” said he. It also aligns with our mission to combine innovation and patient centered care in order to define the next era of healthcare.

Defining Neurosurgical Standards

Prior robotic systems, these intricate procedures relied heavily upon manual techniques using surgical microscopy, where outcomes were dependent on human steadiness. Robotic neurosurgery offers improved instrument stability, tremor reduction, and superior visual clarity, setting new global standards in safety and precision.

The KFSHRC has a long history of pioneering robotic surgeries. This includes the first robotic heart and liver transplants. These milestones have also earned the institution international recognition and placed it among the world’s leading centers for minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Global Recognition, Leadership

KFSHRC is recognized for its excellence on the global stage. The hospital is ranked first in the Middle East, North Africa, and 15th worldwide among the top 250 academic medical centres for 2025. The hospital was also named as the most valuable healthcare brand of the Middle East in Brand Finance’s 2024 list and appeared in Newsweek list of the World’s Best Hospitals in 2025, Best Smart Hospitals in 2025, and Best Specialized Hospitals in 2026. This further solidified its reputation as a leader in innovation-driven care.
