Mortenson, a construction firm headquartered in Minneapolis, has been selected as the general contractor for a major new data center project in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. This facility, spanning approximately 700,000 square feet, represents a significant $1 billion investment by Meta, the parent company of Facebook. Once completed, this will be Meta’s 30th data center worldwide and its 26th within the United States.
Innovative Construction Techniques Driving Efficiency
Steve Knighton, Mortenson’s Vice President and General Manager of Data Center Operations, emphasized the integration of cutting-edge construction technologies throughout the project. The team will employ Building Information Modeling (BIM) for precise coordination, utilize drones for comprehensive site data collection, and implement robotic automated construction layout systems to enhance accuracy and speed. Additionally, Meta’s stakeholders will engage in virtual reality (VR) reviews using Meta Quest technology, facilitating immersive project oversight and collaboration.
Environmental Sustainability at the Core
Meta has prioritized sustainability in the design of the Beaver Dam campus. A key feature is the implementation of a dry-cooling system, which eliminates the need for traditional water-based cooling methods. This innovation allows the data center to return 100% of the water it uses back to local watersheds, addressing growing environmental concerns about water consumption in data center operations. This approach is particularly relevant amid ongoing debates in states like Arizona and California, where the environmental impact of AI-intensive data centers is under scrutiny.
Community Engagement and Ecological Restoration
Local residents have voiced concerns regarding the facility’s water usage, prompting Meta to commit nearly $200 million toward infrastructure improvements, including network upgrades and utility station enhancements. In addition to these investments, Meta plans to restore approximately 570 acres of wetlands and prairie surrounding the data center, contributing to regional biodiversity and ecosystem health.

The Beaver Dam project arrives amid a surge in data center construction, which is outpacing many other nonresidential building sectors. According to a recent survey by the Associated Builders and Contractors, about 14% of contractors currently hold data center contracts, and these firms report significantly higher project backlogs compared to those without such engagements. Meta anticipates completing the Beaver Dam facility by 2027, further expanding its global data infrastructure to support growing digital demands.
