The company emphasizes that this method is distinct from facial recognition technology, as it does not single out or identify any individual in the content. This visual assessment complements existing AI mechanisms that evaluate textual content and user interactions to approximate age.

At present, Meta is piloting this visual age estimation feature in a limited number of countries before planning a wider implementation. The system will automatically categorize users into Meta’s Teen Accounts, which are tailored to provide age-appropriate experiences and protections.
