Samsung and Telus Forge a Pioneering Alliance to Advance AI-Driven, Software-Centric Networks

Samsung has announced a strategic collaboration with Telus to deploy its innovative RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) technology across Telus’ wireless infrastructure. This initiative aims to introduce intelligent automation, enhance energy efficiency, and elevate overall network performance.

Revolutionizing Network Management with AI-Powered RIC

The RIC platform, built on an open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) software framework, leverages artificial intelligence and automation to dynamically optimize network operations through smart applications. Samsung describes this technology as a critical step in evolving Telus’ network into a fully virtualized, AI-enabled ecosystem.

By integrating the RIC, Telus will be able to manage both traditional hardware-based systems and modern virtualized network components seamlessly. This hybrid compatibility facilitates comprehensive automation across the entire network, promising improved operational efficiency and potential cost reductions.

Contextualizing Telus’ Network Transformation and AI Initiatives

Telus has been actively advancing its AI and network capabilities. Recently, the company divested nearly half (49.9%) of its cell tower assets to the Quebec pension fund manager, La Caisse, in a transaction valued at C$1.26 billion. This move was met with mixed reactions, with Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau labeling it a short-term solution.

In parallel, Telus has partnered with OpenText to launch a comprehensive suite of data analytics tools designed for businesses utilizing Telus’ AI-powered data centers, further underscoring its commitment to digital transformation.

Deployment Timeline and Future Prospects

The initial rollout of Samsung’s RIC solution began in July and is scheduled to continue through 2025. Extensive testing will be conducted across multiple Canadian cities to ensure robust performance and scalability.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of Canada’s telecommunications infrastructure, positioning Telus and Samsung at the forefront of AI-driven network innovation.
