China’s AI classroom revolution takes root

In a classroom at Beijing No. 13 Secondary School, an AI-driven system had already processed several weeks of student data before the math lesson began. This intelligent assistant analyzed each learner’s recent participation, homework submissions, and quiz outcomes to tailor educational content precisely to their needs.

Within moments, the AI generated customized question sets for students across varying proficiency levels and designed personalized assignments for after class. Educators then reviewed and fine-tuned these AI-crafted materials to ensure quality before implementation.

This example illustrates a sweeping evolution underway in China’s vast basic education landscape, which serves over 220 million students. After decades of expanding access and reducing regional disparities, the nation is now harnessing artificial intelligence to elevate educational quality and cater to individual learning requirements.

From Universal Enrollment to Personalized Learning

Having achieved near-universal enrollment in compulsory education, China’s educational priorities have shifted. The focus is no longer solely on access but on delivering higher-quality, customized learning experiences for every student.

China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) emphasizes the integration of AI across all facets of education, aiming to revolutionize teaching methodologies and learning environments. In April, the Ministry of Education unveiled the “AI Plus Education” initiative, accelerating AI adoption in primary and secondary schools, promoting interdisciplinary curricula, and expanding AI’s classroom applications.

Practical AI Applications Across Regions

These strategic policies are already materializing nationwide. For example, in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, students participate in AI literacy courses where they create digital avatars that narrate the city’s heritage in the local dialect using generative AI technology.

Meanwhile, at Beijing No. 13 Secondary School, the AI assistant identifies common learning challenges within the class and pinpoints individual student strengths and weaknesses. It also offers teachers innovative approaches to enrich their lessons through AI insights.

Teacher Zhang Meiya collaborated with the AI system to contextualize abstract topics by developing case studies on contemporary issues such as smart-home privacy conflicts and the proliferation of AI-generated misinformation. These real-world examples were integrated into lessons on civic rights and responsibilities, making the content more relatable for students.

Enhancing Efficiency and Individual Support

At Beijing No. 35 High School, programming instructor Dong Yue highlights another advantage of AI integration. “Previously, reviewing each student’s code line by line was time-consuming and labor-intensive. Now, the AI agent swiftly performs initial assessments,” Dong explained. This efficiency allows educators to dedicate more time to lesson planning, personalized coaching, and professional growth rather than repetitive grading tasks.

These advancements build upon years of digital education investments. By 2020, China had achieved internet connectivity in all primary and secondary schools, establishing a robust foundation for digital learning tools. AI is now recognized as the next pivotal step in this ongoing educational transformation.

Balancing Standardization with Personalized Learning

AI technology is also addressing the longstanding challenge of balancing standardized curricula with individualized instruction. According to Wang Jiayi, China’s vice minister of education, the future of education lies in personalized learning pathways that adapt to each student’s unique needs. This approach promotes flexibility, learner autonomy, diverse assessment methods, and tailored teaching strategies.

However, educators acknowledge that AI systems are not flawless. Current technologies may struggle to accurately evaluate creative writing, such as travel narratives, or fully comprehend students’ reasoning in complex math problems. Additionally, data compatibility issues between different AI platforms remain a hurdle in some regions.

The Evolving Role of Educators in an AI-Enhanced Classroom

“This is precisely why teachers’ roles are not diminished but rather enhanced,” said Wu Chunhui, vice principal of Beijing No. 13 Secondary School. “AI serves as a supportive tool; it cannot replace teachers’ ability to provide ethical guidance, inspire intellectual curiosity, or engage empathetically with students facing complex challenges.”

Liu Jizhong, principal of Beijing No. 35 High School, envisions educators increasingly becoming architects of learning experiences, overseers of AI integration, and champions of ethical technology use, moving beyond the traditional role of knowledge transmitters.

AI as a Catalyst for Holistic Student Development

For educators, technology is a means rather than an end. AI is embraced as a tool to enhance access to quality education while prioritizing students’ comprehensive growth.

Yao Xiaoying, principal of the Foreign Languages Primary School affiliated with Shenzhen University Education Group, encapsulates this vision: “Technology is merely the spark. What we truly aim to ignite is each child’s intrinsic motivation-the confidence to say, ‘I want to learn, and I am capable of doing so.'”
