Galgotias University Faces Expulsion from AI Summit Over Robotic Dog Controversy

Galgotias University was recently instructed to vacate its exhibition space at the India AI Impact Expo 2026 following a dispute surrounding a robotic dog it presented during the event.

Dispute Over Robotic Dog’s Origin Sparks Backlash

The controversy ignited when the university showcased a robotic canine named “Orion,” promoting it as part of their artificial intelligence and robotics research. However, social media users quickly pointed out that the device was, in fact, a Unitree Go2 model manufactured in China, rather than an original creation developed by the university’s team.

This revelation led to widespread criticism accusing Galgotias University of misrepresenting imported technology as their own innovation, which ultimately resulted in the organizers asking the institution to remove its stall from the expo.

University Responds to Allegations with Clarification

In response to the growing online criticism, Galgotias University released an official statement addressing the situation. The university emphasized that it never claimed to have built the robotic dog itself. Instead, it highlighted its commitment to nurturing future engineers and innovators who will design and manufacture such advanced technologies domestically in India.

“To clarify, Galgotias University has not developed this robotic dog, nor have we claimed to do so. Our focus is on cultivating talent that will soon pioneer such technologies here in Bharat,” the statement read.

The institution further stressed its dedication to providing students with access to cutting-edge tools and platforms, enabling hands-on learning and skill development in AI and robotics.

“Negative narratives can demoralize our students, who are diligently working to innovate and enhance their expertise by engaging with global technologies,” the university added.

ORION: A Showcase of Applied Robotics and AI Integration

Galgotias University described ORION-short for Operational Robotic Intelligence Node-as a key attraction at their pavilion. The robotic dog was used to demonstrate real-time interaction with expo attendees, showcasing practical applications of robotics and intelligent system integration.

“The live demonstrations attracted considerable attention, underscoring our commitment to experiential learning and real-world AI implementation,” the university noted.

India AI Impact Expo 2026: A Global Platform for AI Innovation

The India AI Impact Expo 2026, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, has emerged as one of the largest AI conventions in the Global South. The event has attracted over 20 Heads of State, 60 ministers, and 500 leading AI experts worldwide.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s growing role in advancing artificial intelligence technologies, emphasizing their potential to drive both national development and contribute to global progress.

Looking Ahead: Fostering Indigenous AI and Robotics Innovation

This incident underscores the challenges and opportunities faced by Indian educational institutions striving to establish themselves as hubs of original AI and robotics innovation. With increasing government support and international collaboration, universities like Galgotias are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s technological future.

According to recent data from the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), India’s AI market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38% through 2027, highlighting the critical importance of fostering homegrown talent and innovation.
