Moloughney shared captivating footage on social media platforms, showcasing the Yarbo snowblower’s autonomous operation amid the storm. The robot efficiently completed its initial pass, then returned to its charging station to recharge to approximately 80% capacity within about 75 minutes before resuming its task independently. Moloughney expressed enthusiasm about the machine’s performance, remarking, “It’s doing an impressive job so far!” while enjoying a warm beverage indoors.
Winter Storm Fern’s Impact Across New Jersey
Winter Storm Fern brought a challenging mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, complicating snow removal efforts statewide. Northern New Jersey experienced snowfall accumulations ranging from 4 to 5 inches, with Bergen County receiving close to 5 inches and Essex and Union counties seeing over 4 inches. Central regions reported between 3 and 6 inches, while southern parts of the state generally recorded 4 to 5 inches, though coastal and airport areas saw lower totals due to icy precipitation.
Forecasters predicted that the storm would leave significant snow cover, with northwestern and far northern areas potentially receiving between 12 and 18 inches, and some isolated spots possibly exceeding 20 inches. Meanwhile, northeastern and central New Jersey were expected to accumulate 8 to 12 inches. Earlier in January, Moloughney posted a detailed review of the Yarbo’s capabilities during a previous snow event. The video highlighted the robot’s ability to follow pre-mapped routes, detect nearby people to pause operation, and return to its charging station when battery levels were low. Impressively, the snowblower completed the lower section of his driveway on a single charge and resumed work remotely while Moloughney was away, even restarting from 20 miles distant after additional snowfall.
Despite these successes, the robot faced obstacles during the Winter Storm Fern test. It became stuck on an icy ridge left by prior plowing and later operated with only one side of its auger due to a broken shear pin, an issue unnoticed until Moloughney returned home. He rated the machine’s overall performance as a “C to C-plus,” attributing difficulties to the severe weather conditions and initial setup decisions.
Moloughney noted, “This was a tough snowstorm – about an inch of ice from prolonged hail followed by 1 to 2 inches of snow.” He emphasized that the Yarbo is designed to work continuously during storms, clearing snow multiple times so that by the end, it only needs to finish the final pass.
