Norwegian robot manufacturer 1X announced the NEO Gamma – a bipedal humanoid robotic device powered by AI that can do multiple household chores such as vacuuming, cleaning windows and carrying laundry.
In the last few months we’ve seen some significant breakthroughs in robotics, such as STAR1, the fastest bipedal bot in the world, or SE01 – a bipedal walking robot that is known for its smoothness. However, in terms of everyday utility, the offerings were lacking. Norwegian Robotics’ NEO Gamma is a humanoid robot butler that can perform household chores such as vacuuming and serving tea. To make the robot appear more human, the company worked with Shima Seiki – a Japanese manufacturer who makes knitting machines – to create a soft, smooth suit that hides the robot’s metal body.
1X claims that the recently revealed NEO Gamma robot can perform a wide range of actions. It can crouch down to pick objects up off the floor, sit in a chair and arrange crooked items around the home. It can even pour tea into a cup. The company uses motion capture data from humans to train the robot in more human-like movements.
Noise is a major factor when you have a robotic partner in your home every day. 1X had to make sure that the NEO Gamma would be as quiet as possible. The humanoid robot is as quiet as modern refrigerators thanks to a drive system that mimics human tendons.
Thanks to its advanced AI component, the 1X can function autonomously, but thanks to four built-in microphones, it is very responsive to commands by its human users. It can also respond and carry out simple conversations, or play music via a speaker in its pelvic area.
“In the near future, we will all have our own household robots like Rosie or Baymax,” 1X CEO Bernd Bornig said. “But for humanoid robots to truly become part of everyday life, they must be developed together with humans – they cannot be developed alone. We look forward to sharing more details on NEO Gamma soon.”
