Wendy’s Trials Underground Robot Delivery for Food Orders

0

Wendy’s is exploring a new curbside pickup method by testing a system where robots deliver food through underground tunnels. In collaboration with autonomous logistics firm Pipedream, the fast-food chain is piloting an innovative method for online order pickups. The plan involves robots traveling through a network of tunnels that transport freshly prepared food from the kitchen directly to “Instant Pickup” portals located next to parking spots.

When a customer arrives, they can confirm their order with the restaurant staff using a speaker system integrated into the Instant Pickup portal. Once the order is verified, an autonomous robot is dispatched through the tunnels to deliver the food directly to the customer’s vehicle. This system utilizes temperature-controlled technology to maintain the food’s ideal temperature during transit, meaning customers won’t have to enter the restaurant or wait in a traditional drive-thru.

Reflecting the growing trend toward mobile ordering, Wendy’s expressed enthusiasm about the project. “We’re thrilled to be the first quick service restaurant to partner with Pipedream, leveraging their unique delivery technology to reinvent digital pick-ups and bring more Wendy’s to more people as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Matt Spessard, Wendy’s senior vice president and global chief technology officer.

Although the technology is not yet active at any Wendy’s locations, the company plans to test the system at an existing restaurant later this year.
