Beijing outlines tech push with focus on AI, 6G, humanoid robots

Published:

China is setting ambitious goals to revolutionize its technology landscape by focusing on advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) chips, expediting the rollout of 6G networks, and establishing pioneering standards in humanoid robotics as part of its latest five-year strategic plan.

Officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed during a recent press briefing that the government is committed to achieving significant progress in foundational AI technologies, including the development of specialized training chips and heterogeneous computing architectures.

The MIIT also emphasized the integration of AI across diverse industries such as software development, biotechnology, and telecommunications. Their agenda includes fostering innovation in AI algorithms and intelligent systems, nurturing enterprise expansion, and enhancing the AI ecosystem by implementing industry-wide standards and promoting open-source collaborations.

In parallel, China plans to cultivate an open-source platform dedicated to humanoid robotics and will introduce comprehensive guidelines to advance embodied intelligence, aiming to position itself at the forefront of robotics innovation.

China’s technology sector has experienced exponential growth in recent years, with both emerging startups and established tech giants accelerating innovation amid escalating technological competition with the United States.

Regional governments are also embedding high-tech development as a cornerstone of their economic strategies for the coming years.

For instance, Hangzhou, a major city in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, has set a target to develop over three globally leading open-source foundational AI models and generate upwards of 600 billion yuan (approximately US$86 billion) in core AI industry revenue by 2030, according to its 15th five-year plan. The city is already a hub for innovative companies such as AI startup DeepSeek and robotics firm Unitree Robotics.

With China’s commitment to fostering innovation through strategic investments and policy support, the nation is poised to become a dominant force in next-generation technologies, driving economic growth and technological leadership on the global stage.
