How We Identify Tomorrow’s Technology Leaders
Open Call for Nominations
Our selection process begins with an open invitation for nominations, typically launched in the final months of the preceding year. We encourage self-nominations to ensure we discover emerging talents who might otherwise remain under the radar. This year, we received 420 nominations from approximately 40 countries, with nearly 70% originating from the United States, followed by the United Kingdom, Switzerland, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
After closing nominations, our editorial team dedicates several weeks to reviewing submissions, focusing on candidates whose work offers scalable solutions to societal challenges or represents significant scientific breakthroughs with broad applicability. We prioritize originality and impact over incremental advances or niche projects.
Evaluating Semifinalists
From the initial pool, we shortlisted 108 semifinalists. These candidates provided detailed applications, including resumes, three recommendation letters, and responses to targeted questions about their work. Many also submitted supplementary materials such as videos, academic publications, or project links to showcase their achievements comprehensively.
Expert Panel Review
A diverse panel of 38 volunteer experts, many of whom have served for years, rigorously assessed the semifinalists. Judges were matched with candidates based on their expertise to ensure informed evaluations. Each application was reviewed by at least two judges, with most receiving three assessments, ensuring a thorough and balanced appraisal.
Our esteemed judges include leading figures such as materials scientist Yet-Ming Chiang (MIT), Caltech’s Julia Greer, neuroscientist Ed Boyden (MIT), and University of Chicago computer scientist Ben Zhao. John Rogers, a Northwestern University professor and inaugural Innovators list member from 1999, has contributed his expertise for over a decade, emphasizing the award’s recognition of young scientists whose work combines fundamental insight with practical relevance.
Final Selection by Editorial Leadership
In the concluding phase, editors specializing in biotechnology, climate science, energy, and artificial intelligence review the semifinalists alongside staff reporters who may nominate promising candidates encountered during their coverage. A senior editorial team then synthesizes judges’ scores and internal recommendations to select the final 35 honorees, ensuring a diverse representation across disciplines and geographies.
From this distinguished group, the Innovator of the Year is chosen based on exceptional merit and transformative potential.
While it is impossible to recognize every deserving individual, our multi-tiered process-combining open nominations, expert evaluations, and editorial insight-strives to uphold the highest standards of rigor and fairness.
