Career Milestones in Telecommunications Innovation

Rallabandi’s journey began in 2009 at Verizon’s Innovation Labs in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he managed early trials of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) systems-foundational technologies for 4G broadband networks. This work laid the groundwork for scalable broadband architectures that underpin today’s 5G and emerging 6G networks.

“We established the initial integration between legacy telecom infrastructure and cloud-native networks,” he reflects.

In 2011, he transitioned to AT&T Labs in Redmond, Washington, as a senior manager and principal solutions architect. There, he led the design and testing of next-generation wireless systems, including the nationwide FirstNet broadband network for first responders and the pioneering Voice over LTE (VoLTE) video calling service.

By 2018, Rallabandi joined Samsung’s Networks Division in Plano, Texas, spearheading 5G virtualization and Open RAN projects that promote flexible, scalable, and vendor-interoperable network deployments.

Innovative Network Solutions Tailored for Small Businesses

Seeking to maximize his impact beyond corporate confines, Rallabandi co-founded Invences with his wife, Lakshmi Rallabandi, a computer science engineer who serves as the company’s CEO. The self-funded startup now supports over 50 global clients with a team boasting a combined 200 years of technology expertise.

“Our goal is to leverage the insights gained from large telecom companies to address automation gaps specifically for small businesses,” Rallabandi explains. “We design networks that streamline operations and reduce expenses.”

Unlike traditional telecom networks optimized for dense urban centers, Invences reimagines network architecture to minimize complexity, cost, and operational demands, ensuring connectivity is accessible and affordable, especially for rural communities.

Integrating Next-Generation Technologies

Invences incorporates advanced technologies such as Open RAN, virtualized RAN, digital twins, telemetry, and sophisticated analytics into its network designs. Some deployments utilize agentic AI-autonomous systems capable of independently planning and executing network management tasks, with digital twins simulating and validating AI decisions before implementation.

“Autonomy enhances system management of complexity, allowing humans to focus on strategic goals rather than routine operations,” Rallabandi notes.

He has also contributed to AI-driven telecom observability tools that enable networks to detect anomalies and optimize performance proactively.

Virtual O-RAN Innovation Lab and Strategic Partnerships

Invences operates a virtual O-RAN innovation lab where clients can test 5G system interoperability, trial new features, and experiment with upgrades in a controlled environment.

In collaboration with Trilogy Networks, Invences developed the FarmGrid platform, deploying private 5G networks, edge AI, and digital twins to enhance agricultural efficiency in Fargo, North Dakota, and Yuma, Arizona. This platform connects farms with sensors, analytics, and autonomous machinery to enable precision agriculture, optimize water usage, and support real-time decision-making.

Commitment to Community and Professional Growth Through IEEE

Rallabandi emphasizes the importance of active engagement with IEEE for both personal development and giving back to the engineering community. He frequently speaks at IEEE conferences and participates in initiatives such as IEEE Future Networks and the Connecting the Unconnected (CTU) program, which strives to close the digital divide by delivering affordable internet access to underserved populations.
