NVIDIA announced on Tuesday that it would resume sales of its H20 AI chips customized for the Chinese markets, along with the launch of a RTX Pro GPU for smart factories and logistic applications.
On the following day, NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang gave a speech at Beijing’s third China International Supply Chain Expo. It was his first time speaking at the expo in Chinese. He spoke about NVIDIA’s journey of growth, the future AI, and China’s vital role in the global AI ecosystem and supply chain.
What’s important: It is Jensen Huang’s third trip to China this year. He arrived in Beijing earlier than expected and posted a picture with Xiaomi founder Lei Jul on social media. The US government banned the export of NVIDIA H20 AI chips to China in April. This recent approval to resume sales is a significant policy change expected to help NVIDIA gain momentum in China’s artificial intelligence infrastructure market.
Details Huang delivered his speech at the Supply China Expo wearing a traditional Chinese Tang Suit and in Chinese. Huang said that in the next decade we will see AI robots who can truly understand the physical world and will completely transform the way factories work. According to Huang’s address, more than 1.5 million Chinese developers are building on NVIDIA’s platform and bringing their innovations to life. He said that China’s world-class open-source AI models, such as DeepSeek and Alibaba, Tencent Hunyuan and MiniMax, and Baidu Ernie Bot are accelerating global AI development.
The context is NVIDIA developed the H20 AI Chip specifically for the Chinese Market in late 2023 after the US government tightened the export restrictions on high performance GPUs such as A100 and H100. The H20 was introduced to meet the demand of Chinese cloud service providers, AI firms and US regulations.
- The US government temporarily banned the export of the H20 and similar models in April 2024 due to national security concerns.
