Vard to Construct Four Advanced Robotic Vessels for Ocean Infinity

Ocean Infinity, a Houston-based leader in marine robotics, has awarded a contract exceeding €200 million to Vard, the Norwegian shipbuilding arm of Italy’s Fincantieri Group, to design and build a fleet of four state-of-the-art multi-purpose robotic vessels (MPVs). This strategic partnership highlights the growing momentum in autonomous maritime technology and the shift towards unmanned operations in the shipping industry.

Integrated Systems and Cutting-Edge Technology

Under this agreement, Vard Electro will supply the comprehensive SeaQ system suite, enabling seamless remote operation capabilities. Complementing this, Vard Interiors will focus on outfitting the vessels with innovative, energy-efficient designs that prioritize crew comfort and operational efficiency. The launch and recovery system (LARS), essential for handling remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and geotechnical equipment, will be provided by Seaonics, ensuring advanced deployment and retrieval functionalities.

Construction Timeline and Global Shipyard Collaboration

The construction of these vessels will be split between Vard’s Norwegian shipyards and its facility in Vung Tau, Vietnam. The first two ships are slated for delivery in the first and second quarters of 2028 from Norway, while the remaining two will be completed in Vietnam, expected to be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of the same year. This global production approach leverages Vard’s extensive shipbuilding network to meet ambitious delivery schedules.

Leadership Insights on Maritime Robotization

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, emphasized the significance of this contract: “In today’s era of autonomous vessels, our collaboration with Ocean Infinity underscores Fincantieri and Vard’s commitment to pioneering robotic solutions within the maritime sector. Our worldwide manufacturing capabilities and technological expertise empower us to support leading partners in navigating the future of maritime innovation.”

Advancing Subsea Innovation Through Collaboration

This contract follows closely on the heels of Vard’s memorandum of understanding with NORCE, focusing on joint research and development in subsea technologies. Such collaborations are vital as the maritime industry accelerates its adoption of robotics and automation to enhance operational safety and efficiency.
