Overcoming Physical Challenges to Reclaim Lost Belongings
In Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, more than four months have passed since a devastating fire ravaged a residential complex, displacing thousands and claiming 168 lives. Among those affected is 59-year-old Fanny Mok, who is now preparing to revisit her 13th-floor apartment-her home for three decades-to salvage what remains of her possessions.
Due to lingering physical limitations, including knee pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath, Mok is utilizing robotic exoskeleton legs to assist her ascent. These advanced devices provide crucial support, enabling her to climb the stairs of her former building, which she has been practicing on in a nearby apartment complex.
Facilitating Access for Elderly Residents Through Technology
The fire severely impacted seven high-rise towers within the Wang Fuk Court estate, a community originally housing approximately 4,600 residents, over a third of whom are seniors aged 65 and above. The 31-story buildings present a formidable challenge for many elderly former tenants, especially when tasked with retrieving belongings within a limited timeframe.
From April 20 to May 4, displaced residents will be granted access to their apartments for a strict three-hour period to collect personal items. Recognizing the physical demands of this process, an NGO named AidVengers Federation has partnered with Hypershell, a Shanghai-based robotics firm, to provide exoskeleton legs to those in need. Prospective users undergo training and must pass a competency test, which currently has a 70% success rate, before being authorized to use the equipment.

For many, the task of gathering decades’ worth of belongings within a few hours is overwhelming. Betty Ho, 61, who lived on the 15th floor for 35 years, expressed the difficulty of the process, emphasizing the emotional significance of items such as cash savings and family photo albums that chronicle her life’s journey.
“It’s nearly impossible to take everything you’ve accumulated over decades in such a short window,” Ho shared. “Letting go of these possessions is incredibly hard.”
