Putin’s Bold Claim on Organ Transplants and Immortality: A Reality Check
By Jessica Hamzelou
Recently, a video surfaced featuring global leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping, discussing the concept of immortality. Xi remarked, “At 70, you are still just a young child,” to which Putin, aged 72, responded optimistically about biotechnology enabling longer, youthful lives-even suggesting the possibility of immortality.
However, the reality of organ transplantation is far more nuanced. While these surgeries can replace failing organs and improve quality of life, they do not fundamentally halt or reverse the aging process. Aging remains a multifaceted biological phenomenon, with scientists still debating its underlying causes and how to effectively intervene. Current research focuses on cellular senescence, genetic factors, and metabolic pathways, but no definitive “cure” for aging exists yet.
For example, while heart and kidney transplants can extend life expectancy by years, they do not prevent the gradual decline of other bodily systems. Advances in regenerative medicine and gene editing hold promise, but immortality remains beyond our scientific grasp at this time.
Innovative Robotics Revolutionize Sewer Cleaning in India
In New Delhi, the hazardous practice of manual scavenging-cleaning human waste from sewers and septic tanks-persists despite being outlawed since 1993. This dangerous and unsanitary work has long been performed by marginalized communities, including families like that of Jitender, whose parents were manual scavengers.
To address this, the Delhi government has partnered with nearly 200 contractors to transition from manual labor to mechanized solutions. Cutting-edge robotic systems are now deployed to clean sewer lines safely and efficiently, reducing health risks for workers and improving sanitation standards. These robots range from remotely operated vehicles to autonomous machines equipped with cameras and sensors, capable of navigating complex sewer networks.
This shift not only enhances worker safety but also aligns with India’s broader goals of urban modernization and public health improvement.
