Federal Government Urges Nigerians to Embrace AI and Robotics on World Science Day

In a recent announcement on Wednesday, November 10, the Nigerian Federal Government emphasized the critical role of science in advancing human welfare. Speaking ahead of the 2025 World Science Day for Peace and Development, Esuabana Asanye, the Permanent Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology, called on scientists, policymakers, and citizens to actively engage with cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Machine Learning.

2025 Theme: Building Trust and Shaping the Future of Science

The upcoming World Science Day centers on the theme “Trust, Transformation, and Tomorrow – The Science We Need for 2030.” This theme urges the global scientific community to foster trust in science, revolutionize existing frameworks, and develop innovative solutions that promote fairness and sustainability worldwide. It highlights the necessity of science as a foundation for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Promoting Science for National Growth and Peace

Asanye stressed that science must be accessible and serve as a beacon of knowledge for all Nigerians. He advocated for enhanced communication and collaboration between researchers, government officials, and the public-including international stakeholders-to ensure science drives peace, development, and national progress. “Science should enlighten and empower every citizen,” he remarked.

Ethical Considerations in Emerging Technologies

The Permanent Secretary also highlighted the importance of upholding ethical standards in deploying AI, IoT, robotics, and machine learning technologies. With Nigeria recently designated a “Country of Particular Concern” by the US government due to security challenges, the administration encourages responsible use of social media and digital platforms to foster unity and peace across the nation.

Science as a Catalyst for Industrial and Global Collaboration

The government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging scientific innovation to transform Nigeria’s abundant natural resources into industrial assets that benefit humanity at large. Science is viewed as a vital tool for strengthening both national development and international partnerships. Each year on November 10, UNESCO’s World Science Day serves as a reminder of science’s integral role in society, promoting public engagement and dialogue on scientific advancements and their societal impacts.

By encouraging informed discussions and collaboration, Nigeria aims to position itself at the forefront of technological progress while ensuring that science remains a force for peace, equity, and sustainable development.
