***************************************************
Hongkong Post announced today (July 21) that an information security incident involving its EC-Ship account holders was identified today. The incident involved a robot accessing the address books of EC Ship account holders. Hongkong Post immediately took action to block unauthorised access after identifying the incident. It also followed established guidelines, and reported the case on the same date to the Police and the Digital Policy Office. The EC Ship service has returned to normal.
Hongkong Post will work closely with Police to investigate the cyberattacks. According to a preliminary assessment, it is possible that the incident involves the information in the address books of EC Ship account holders. This includes senders’ and recipient’s names, addresses, telephone numbers, fax numbers, and email addresses. The investigation is still ongoing to determine the number of affected account holders and if any personal data has been leaked. Hongkong Post is working to inform the affected account holders of any updates as soon as they become available. Hongkong Post adheres to established Government procedures in information and cybersecurity. It is currently seeking advice on the investigation from the DPO and will further enhance its system security.
