More than 500 androids, engineered by robotics teams representing 16 different nations, converged at the National Speed Skating Oval-originally constructed for the 2022 Winter Olympics-to engage in a diverse array of athletic and practical challenges.

The event featured a broad spectrum of contests, ranging from 100-meter hurdles and basketball matches to boxing bouts. Beyond sports, robots also demonstrated their utility in tasks such as medicine sorting and cleaning, highlighting their potential for real-world applications.

One of the morning’s highlights was a five-a-side football game featuring child-sized humanoid robots. For instance, Unitree, a leading domestic robotics firm, showcased humanoid robots competing in a 1500-meter race, outperforming their rivals by a significant margin.

The fastest robot completed the distance in an impressive 6 minutes and 29 seconds. While this time remains well behind human world records, it marks a significant leap forward for robotic mobility, especially considering that just a few decades ago, robots struggled with basic locomotion.

Challenges and Safety Incidents

Not all events proceeded flawlessly. During one race, a robot accidentally collided with its human operator, causing the handler to fall. Fortunately, no injuries occurred. Such incidents underscore the experimental nature of these competitions and the ongoing development of robot control systems.

China’s Strategic Investment in Humanoid Robotics

Organizers emphasize that although robot contests have existed previously, this is the first global event exclusively dedicated to humanoid robots. China has positioned humanoid robotics as a cornerstone of its national technology agenda.

In March, Beijing announced a substantial fund of one trillion yuan aimed at fostering innovation in tech startups, including those focused on robotics and artificial intelligence. Already the world’s largest market for industrial robots, China is now striving to lead in humanoid robotics, targeting both industrial applications and public engagement.

The Games also served as an educational platform, with numerous schools arranging visits for students to witness the spectacle firsthand. Cui Han, a mother attending with her 10-year-old son, expressed hope that the event would spark his interest in technology and engineering.

For 18-year-old Chen Ruiyuan, who is preparing to study automation at university, the event was more than entertainment-it was a glimpse into the future. He predicts that humanoid robots will rival human capabilities within the next decade. Chen’s favorite competition was boxing, noting significant improvements in the robots’ agility compared to previous years.

The audience remained supportive even when robots faltered, such as a Transformer-like machine attempting a kung fu move but ending up spinning helplessly on its back. These moments highlighted the infancy of humanoid robotics and the ongoing challenges developers face.
