Telecel Ghana Foundation organised a special DigiTech Academy project exhibition in Kumasi, for young pupils in Ashanti Region beneficiary schools to showcase innovative tech solutions that tackle real-life challenges. DigiTech Academy, Telecel Ghana Foundation’s 12-week intensive programme in robotics and Internet of Things (IoT), as well as programming and digital skills is a 12-week training program. The immersive learning sessions are run in conjunction with the regular Ghana Education Services curriculum at selected upper primary and junior secondary schools across the country. The showcase was held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in conjunction with the Ashanti Month celebrations of the telco. DigiTech Academy graduates presented over a dozen different projects. These ranged from smart ballot boxes to an automated class attendance system and robotic produce harvester, as well as interactive web applications that addressed malnutrition, bullying and language barriers, and mental health decline. Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson from Telecel Ghana’s Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications, spoke at the project showcase and said that she was impressed by the level of innovation displayed by the young learners. “For young people with little knowledge of technology to create these innovative projects after only 12 weeks of training proves that when young talent is given the right tools and opportunities, they can create and innovate and shape a better Ghana,” said Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson.

We are also proud to say that 70% of our learners are females, as this will help bridge the gender gap within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The DigiTech Academy Exhibition brought together the Senior Management Team of the telco, pupils from participating schools, STEM educators and parents, as well as local government representatives involved in education. They all expressed their admiration for the depth, creativity and innovation of the projects displayed. Adwoa Kesewaa Gaisie, Director of Education for the Ejisu Municipality, said that DigiTech Academy is unlocking the potential of students in the municipality.

We have seen an increase in the confidence of students in learning since the programme began. She said that they are more willing to explore STEM projects in order to solve problems. “I encourage you all to keep this curiosity for STEM alive,” she added. DigiTech Academy is a part of the Foundation’s Connected Learning Pillar and aims to bridge the digital education gap by providing training and digital tools. The three schools participating in the exhibition are Ejisu M/A experimental School, St. Anthony’s R/C Model School, and Ejisu Presbyterian Model School. Lordina Tawiah said that the training programme introduced her to career opportunities in STEM, and ignited her interest in solving issues using technology.

This programme has shown me how technology can make life easier and better. I hope DigiTech Academy will continue so that many young people can discover their talents, especially girls, and use it to create a positive impact in our society,” added she.
